Exercise 6.1 Writing Goals and Objectives from Mission Statements

Objective: To practice writing short-range planning goals, management by objective statements, and program design statements from two different mission statements.

Directions (see the example below)

    A. Read each mission statement.
    B. Then write a 3-5 year short-range planning goal (insert a verb, subject, and measurement device into the blank lines).
    C. Write two 1-year management by objective statements (insert a verb, subject, and measurement device into the blank lines).
    D. Write two program design statements (insert a verb, subject, and measurement device into the blank lines).

3-5 YEAR SHORT-RANGE PLANNING GOALS

Defines basic areas of programming effort: identifies the types of activities, events, services, or facilities that will be provided

1-YEAR MANAGEMENT BY OBJECTIVE STATEMENTS

Specific programs to accomplish, usually tied to a budget element or work program

PROGRAM DESIGN STATEMENTS

Statements of leisure experiences desired and/or terminal performance outcomes to be demonstrated by participants.

1. At the end of the league, each player (noun) on a roster will have played (verb) in at least one-half of the games played (measurement device).

2. At the end of the league, each player (noun) will demonstrate (verb) softball knowledge by scoring 75% or higher (measurement device) on a softball rules test.
